Genesis Centre is a full-service recreation and wellness facility located in the heart of northeast Calgary. At 255,000 square feet, there’s no shortage of space or activities for any life-stage in this multi-sport complex. Walk through the doors and you gain access to two indoor field houses, oversized gymnasium, event hall, multi-purpose and meeting rooms, two outdoor soccer fields and more.
Take a time-out to interact with the visitors, staff, and community members at Genesis Centre, and you’ll understand why it’s so much more than just a recreation centre; it’s a welcoming central hub that brings people together and unifies the surrounding community.
We spoke with some team members at Genesis Centre to learn more about what makes it so unique:
Who typically uses Genesis Centre?
There is a wide variety of people who use the facility ranging from toddlers to teens to adults. Most users live in northeast communities—including the Genesis Land community of Saddlestone. That said, people from across other parts of Calgary are welcome to use the facility!
What are the most popular programs and services that are offered?
Active Adults is one of the most popular programs at the Centre, which provides free access to activities such as badminton, tennis, bocce and indoor walking. It is a great way to connect with friends and meet other community members.
Drop-in programming such as badminton, soccer and basketball are popular for both drop-in guests and pass holders. Regardless of age, fitness level, or experience, there are lots of fun and inclusive programs to take advantage of!
How does Genesis Centre bring people from the community together?
Genesis Centre gives them a space to celebrate their cultures, values and beliefs. Programming and services are catered to the needs of the people who live in surrounding areas with the hope of inspiring people to be engaged within the community.
How would you describe the spirit of the surrounding communities like?
Vibrant, multicultural, and tight-knit. There is a shared view that people are united through their differences. While people have different ways of celebrating their culture, everyone is celebrating. The surrounding communities all live with unity and respect for each other’s traditions.
What is the most rewarding about working with this community?
Genesis Centre becomes a “home away from home” for many people. It is wonderful to see the smiles on guests faces when they are celebrating or partaking in an activity that brings them joy and familiarity. It is very rewarding to be a part of traditions that have such a long and rich history and background.
