Holiday Traditions for the Whole Family

Tis the season for giving back, spending time with our loved ones and indulging in a few treats. Although 2020 was turbulent and challenging, we’ve all gained a new appreciation for our community and support around us. The holiday season has always been about celebrating and coming together as a family, but this year especially is important to be grateful for our loved ones, our health and our homes. What are some of the holiday traditions that your family partakes in to spend quality time together?

Whether you’re enjoying the winter wonderland mother nature gifts to us every year or staying cozied up inside, there are so many great activities and events that create those everlasting memories. Maybe you already are looking forward to these holiday traditions or you’re looking for something new to do this year, read our list of seasonal fun for you and your family. Building Gingerbread Houses is always a fun way to spend time with your family and let your kid’s imaginations run wild. Put on some Christmas music or your favourite Christmas movie in the background and get into the spirit.

Zoo Lights or Airdrie’s Festival of Lights are great events to take your family to. Spend the evening bundled up outside enjoying the beautiful display of lights either at the Calgary Zoo or in the heart of Nose Creek Park in Airdrie.

Get competitive in your living room with Games Night. Do you let your kids beat you or do you show them who’s boss when you play Risk or Monopoly? It’s always fun to add in a wager like the winner doesn’t have to do the dishes after dinner.

Family Sleigh Ride with Horsin Around lets your kids experience the city from a different perspective. There is something extra magical about a snowy sleigh ride and your kids will love singing along to the holiday songs and watching the horses pull the sleigh.

Christmas Markets are the perfect place to get out in the community (socially distant and with masks of course) and finish your holiday shopping by supporting local. There are so many to visit, your weekends will be full! To start, check out Noel Indoor Light Park and Christmas Market and Calgary Farmer’s Market Christmas Market.

Christmas Lights at Spruce Meadows is the perfect winter evening activity because you don’t even have to leave your car. Enjoy the thousands of twinkling lights, festive displays and holiday tunes. Tune your radio to 87.9 FM to listen to the festive music while you enjoy the Spruce Meadows Christmas Lights Drive Through.

Destination Home is all about enjoying your communities to the fullest and finding joy is staying at home this holiday season. We wish you and your family the happiest of holidays and a great New Year!
